This is the perfect quote to introduce you to Nashly Mathews, our Brilliant Woman of the Week.

Thursday morning 9.30am. She walked inside the room with a baby blue dress, high heel sandals, impeccable hair and beautiful make up. Her confidence and attitude stood up among us. With a unique Southern accent she talked to a group of new mothers who were visibly tired due to sleepless nights, all wearing comfortable yoga pants and had their hair in pony tails. Half an hour later, all the women in the group were smiling and feeling good about themselves. Nashly had just given them a boost in their self-confidence.

She is not a motivational speaker, she is not a therapist or a coach. Nashly, 36 years old, is a professional wardrobe consultant. And I will tell you that she knows how to make a woman feel and look their best.

Her business is simple: she goes through your closet, looks at your clothes, sees what fits you properly according to your body shape, the colors that match your skin tone; she looks for pieces that enhance your natural beauty. She makes suggestions on what there is to keep. She makes a list of what you have and then she builds you a new closet with less pieces but all wearable.

“My clients are business women, busy mothers, women who don’t really love shopping (really???) and women on a budget. But mainly women who went through change of lifestyle, career and/or became a mother”, she says.

There are two parts to her business: the home consultation and the boutique. “I ended up opening an exclusive boutique to help women to put outfits together. After we go through their closets and do an inventory, I give them an option of coming to the boutique to add some pieces that will match what they already have”, she adds.

And she does it with passion. She builds relationships with her clients, she understands their needs and above all she makes you look and feel fabulous.

The Beginning

Nashly worked in high-end boutiques in her native United States, through her university years. However, she built a career in advertising and marketing. Then she met Dave. They had a long distance relationship for two years.

“For four months we met every weekend and our phone bills were around $1,000 dollars. We decided to get married and I moved to Canada”, she says. That was seven years ago. “I stayed home with my step son for almost two years. I felt it was the right thing to do”. And she did until a friend asked her to have a look at her closet. “You are so good with fashion you should do this for other people too”, remarked her friend. “And she became my first client”, Nashly adds. Her career search was within. The passion for fashion was already there.

The lack of a business background didn’t stop her. “I faced a lot of challenges in the beginning because I didn’t know anything about starting a business, I had no contact in the industry, I didn’t know the suppliers, I didn’t understand duty fees, which hurt me for a few years. Besides, I had a sense of fashion from Alabama. Not necessary what people would wear here”, she explains.

Understanding the Culture

To overcome some of the challenges, Nashly immersed herself in the new culture to understand how Canadian women think and what is important to them to be able to build her business.

From home parties in her basement to a private boutique in one of the most desired shopping streets in Toronto, Nashly had to learn a lot. “I didn’t know where to look for help, I made mistakes and it was pure determination that took me here”, she tells me.

“If I was to start all over again I would have worked more to learn about business in Canada. There are so many options here. I didn’t know that there is a grant for foreigners to start business here. I didn’t know that the government has services to help new business owners”, she says. “All I can say to other women interested in starting their own business is to ask a lot of questions and take time to learn”, she adds.

Her business has provided her with a lot of opportunities to experience different things and being exposed to so many cultures. “I feel 100 per cent fulfilled here. The more I look forward the less I look back and the easier it becomes. I couldn’t do today in the US what I do here. Canada really opened the doors for me”, she celebrates.

Success

What makes this kind of business so successful is not necessarily the product; which has to be good, there is no question about it, but what people’s experiences are. And Nashly really understands that.
